Fly to the Quepos Domestic Airport, Costa Rica

Visitors flying to Costa Rica will be pleased to learn there are several transportation options to choose from once they arrive. This is a small country, but the geography is very diverse. Costa Rica has everything from rainforest-covered mountains and volcanoes to idyllic beaches, wetlands, mangroves, and more. 

Flying to Costa Rica

For international travel there are two airports tourists can fly into and out of. The country’s principal hub is located just outside of San Jose City in Alajuela. It is the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). For information about flying into San José, check out the San Jose Airport Guide here.

North of Puntarenas in Guanacaste’s largest city Liberia where you’ll find the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport. Most tourists who fly into this airport plan on visiting the scenic Northwest Pacific beaches, volcanoes, and national parks nearby.

There are approximately 20 Costa Rica airport destinations in the country. Two of them, the Tobias Bolaños in Pavas, San Jose, and the Limon airports, receive flights from neighboring countries Nicaragua and Panama respectively. 

Because there is so much to do and see in Costa Rica, most travelers mix and match transportation options by taking in-country flights and renting a car.

Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park

Take the Quepos La Managua Airport, for example. Quepos is a bustling port town located on the Central Pacific Coast. It has a full-service marina, which offers a wide variety of maritime activities for visitors. Sportfishing, whale and dolphin watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sunset cruises are popular favorites. Most tours are available year-round. 

White water rafting, horseback riding, canopy tours, and ziplines are other, inland adventures people travel to Quepos or Manuel Antonio to experience. 

Just 5 km south of Quepos is the town of Manuel Antonio and the Manuel Antonio National Park. The small beachfront reserve is considered one of the most beautiful parks in the country. 

Visitors can explore its elaborate trail system and relax on any of the four white-sand beaches. Seeing monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and several exotic bird species is practically guaranteed. Expert naturalist guides are also available for hire. They offer an excellent way to glimpse and learn about more of the area’s prolific wildlife. 

The Quepos Airport

The Quepos domestic airport (Code XQP) is located approximately 3 km east of town on Route 34. According to passenger statistics, it is the fourth busiest in-country airport in Costa Rica

The terminal is a no-frills, single structure with helpful and friendly staff. Passengers can only carry 30 lbs. of luggage and extra weight will incur an additional charge. Domestic flights to the Quepos airport run daily and are more frequent during the high season. 

The flight from Juan Santamaria Airport to Quepos takes under 30 minutes and around 50 minutes from the Liberia International Airport. The cost of a one-way trip is about $85 depending on the airline.

There are currently domestic airlines operating in Costa Rica: Sansa, Green Airways, Skyway, and Aerobell. (Visitors should not look for Nature Air, which was a local flight provider that provided flights out of the Bolanos airport. The company recently ceased operations).

Visitors often ask, “Is the Quepos Airport open year-round?” Recently the airport was temporarily closed for remodeling. As of the writing of this article, Quepos La Managua is open every day that flights are scheduled. Check ahead during the low season to confirm.
